Recently, I had the opportunity to create a custom Bombay chest for a bathroom redesign, and I’m excited to share the process behind this unique piece. Finished in striking black and gold tones, the chest features six different shades of monochromatic gold, all applied meticulously using fine art brushes.

Crafting Without Stencils

I believe in letting the art unfold organically, which is why I don’t use stencils or templates. Instead, I start with a light sketch to establish perspective and then allow the piece to evolve according to the vision—whether mine or the client’s. This method not only adds a personal touch but also ensures that each piece feels alive and authentic.

This particular chest will soon be topped with a marble surface and a vessel sink, complemented by a matching mirror to tie the two elements together beautifully.

The Challenges of Creation

About 25 hours into painting, I faced an unexpected hurdle: I injured my painting hand. It was a frustrating moment, as I had to take a brief pause to allow for healing. The shakes that followed made it challenging to focus, but I was determined to come back stronger. This experience served as a reminder of the physical toll that art can sometimes take on us, but also of the passion that drives us to persevere.

Collaborating with Professionals

During the final stages of this project, I reached out to my friend Rolo for assistance. Rolo is an incredibly talented artist and the mastermind behind storyboards for major films, TV shows, and commercials. His keen eye for detail and understanding of how one misplaced line can disrupt an entire piece make him an invaluable resource.

This brings me to an important lesson: when seeking feedback, it’s crucial to rely on true professionals—those who live and breathe their craft. Friends who dabble in art can provide support, but it’s the dedicated artists who can truly help you push your boundaries and elevate your work.

The Artist’s Code

As professionals, it’s our duty to nurture talent, even among friends who are still finding their footing. It’s part of the artist’s code to uplift one another and ensure that no one throws away their potential.

As I wrapped up the chest, I had already laid down about eight layers of paint. While the client loved it, I still needed reassurance that the flowers I was painting looked as they should. This is where having artist friends like Rolo comes in handy. They offer the honest feedback we sometimes need, even if it stings a little. They understand our creative struggles and will inspire us to reach for more.

The Tools of the Trade

Throughout my artistic journey, I’ve collected a variety of brushes—some I use just once and discard, while others have been by my side for over 25 years. These well-worn brushes may look battle-scarred, but they remain my go-tos for their precision and reliability. For this project, I relied on a few of my trusted brushes, each capable of delivering fine details, knowing they were affordable enough to be replaced when necessary.

Conclusion

Creating this custom Bombay chest was not just about the final product; it was about the journey—the challenges, the collaborations, and the invaluable relationships we build along the way. As artists, we must cherish those connections and support one another as we navigate our creative paths. Here’s to transforming spaces and lifting each other up in the process!
