Reviving Character: The Timeless Appeal of Refinished Sideboard

When a client approached me with a beloved sideboard in need of refinishing, I was thrilled to take on the challenge. This piece had been part of her home for years, and it was time to breathe new life into it. The end result was not just a makeover, but a true reflection of her personality and style.

The most crucial aspect of furniture restoration is understanding the history of each piece, as this knowledge allows for an accurate assessment of its current value. If you're uncertain about a piece's worth, I cannot stress this enough: get it appraised by a certified antique appraiser before proceeding with any restoration. This means consulting a professional—not relying on blogs, boards, or even my insights. While I possess a wealth of knowledge in this field, I am not a certified appraiser, and legally, I cannot appraise your items. The expertise required for that comes from years of extensive education and a deep understanding of antiques, and I hold immense respect for those professionals. Their knowledge is truly invaluable.

I often recommend that my clients have certain pieces appraised before I begin any restoration work. There are instances, such as with some sideboards, where painting them can drastically diminish their value. It’s vital to discern the difference; otherwise, a $10,000 piece could lose its worth entirely due to improper treatment or a lack of understanding of what you actually have.

So, do your homework! It will save you significant headaches in the long run.
